September 5th marks International Charity Day. An occasion to reflect on the importance of helping vulnerable people in need. Therefore, we bring you the great story about Marzpet from Armenia who learned how to speak with just a gentle push from Mission East and his own impressive effort.
Words. They float mindlessly out of most people’s mouths like a waterfall flowing down a cliff. But this is not the case for everyone.
This is the story of a boy who has never said a word to a human before. Until he found his voice.
On top of a mountain in the village of Haghartsin in Tavush Marz – in north-east of Armenia, 9-year-old Marzpet lives in a humble hut with his parents. Far from all civilization. The only acquaintances Marzpet has, apart from his parents, are the family’s animals: cows, horses and chickens. Until recently, Marzpet had only opened his mouth to the animals, who were thus the only witnesses to his voice.
Our partner organization @Bridge of Hope, which works with children with disabilities in the most remote areas, became aware of Marzpet and arranged for him to get a place in a primary school in the nearest village.
It began with one word
When he first entered the schoolyard, he was incredibly shy, and here too he didn’t talk to anyone. But then one day it happened! With Marzpet’s own efforts and encouragement from BoH, the first word was directed at a human being. Then came the next, and then the next. This is a big step for Marzpet, who is now adapting to a new environment and learning to communicate for the first time.
His linguistic development is a clear proof of what you can achieve with a strong will, the right support, education and human relationships.
Congratulations on your voice, Marzpet! We look forward to hearing you use it, and we cheer on all other children who go through similar challenges.
