“Recent years have shown us that Mission East’s presence in Syria is needed, as the conflict is very complex. We are therefore delighted that Mission East will soon be able to open a country office in Syria,” says Secretary General Betina Gollander-Jensen.
Mission East has been engaged in responding to the Syrian displacement crisis since 2019, undertaking relief and recovery activities in Syria and Lebanon to meet urgent humanitarian needs and support sustainable livelihood development.
In Syria, as many as 12 million people are recorded as being food insecure, 2.5 million as severely food insecure, and 6.8 million people are internally displaced (WFP Syria 2022). The situation is made worse by drought and acute water shortages, worsening climate, and environmental crises.
New country office
Mission East is now registered in Syria signifying that we can establish a country office and gain access to particularly hard-hit areas of the country.
Khaled Hboubati, President of Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and Betina Gollander-Jensen, Secretary General of Mission East, have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on reaching the most vulnerable people in Syria.
The partnership was formalised last week in Damaskus, where Betina Gollander-Jensen.also met with Khaled Erksoussi, Secretary General of Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
