A brighter future – enabling persons with disabilities in remote mountain communities to exercise their rights
The Karnali region of Mid-West Nepal is one of the most remote regions in Nepal and has the worst human development and poverty indicators. The project district of Humla (in northern Karnali, bordering Tibet) is mountainous, arid and isolated. Disabilities are treated as shameful, and children with disabilities tend to be hidden and neglected. Mission East will collaborate with local disability NGO HEAD Nepal to enable people with disabilities to access their rights (registration, benefits and services) and to participate in community life. Targeting people with disabilities and their families in the Rural Municipality of Sarkegad, the project will provide rights awareness raising and skills training (especially mobility and communication skills for children). Community awareness raising and advocacy will improve public attitudes and CSO stakeholders will work with local government to develop more disability-inclusive policy. Capacity building of CSOs will contribute to building their organizational and advocacy capacity, to be able to continue to push for disability rights.
Overall aim - Persons with disabilities in Nepal are empowered and able to access their human rights.
Objectives:
- Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and their family members have improved capacities and knowledge to understand and access their rights;
- Rural municipality policies reflect an improved awareness and attitude towards disability inclusion by relevant stakeholders;
- Local CSOs in Humla actively engage in advocacy activities promoting the rights of children/people with disabilities.
