Mission East forms strategic partnership with Focus Humanitarian Assistancee

Mission East and Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding forming a strategic partnership in disaster risk reduction activities in Tajikistan. The partnership will expand Mission East’s network considerably in Tajikistan and internationally.
Under the agreement, both agencies will improve their activities within their respective regions of operations (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) for FOCUS, and Khathlon and Sughd provinces for Mission East).

Initially, FOCUS and Mission East will collaborate to support their 2007-2008 projects supported by EU’s Humanitarian Aid Department ECHO. FOCUS will also provide Mission East with geographic information system consulting services during the course of this agreement.

Focus Humanitarian Assistance is an international group of agencies that helps people in need reduce their dependence on humanitarian aid and facilitates their transition to sustainable self-reliant, long-term development. Over its ten years in Tajikistan, the group has implemented numerous programmes with the support of the Government and people of Tajikistan and the international community. Beginning with a programme to address the risks to communities from Lake Sarez, FOCUS has expanded its programmatic activities over the last five years in conjunction with the European Commission and the Swiss, Japanese and US governments. Through these activities, over 300 hazard assessments have been completed, 70 wireless communications radios installed and 150 mitigation projects completed throughout the GBAO. FOCUS fourth project supported by ECHO seeks to continue build on the efforts from the initial three projects to 40 new village organizations in GBAO.
