Mission East supports the first ever Child Assessment Centre in Armenia
The opening ceremony of the first ever Child Assessment Centre in Armenia was held on September 18th with the participation of Mission East and representatives from several ministries and local authorities.
The establishment of the Child Assessment Centre was a requirement of Armenian Special Education Law which was adopted two years ago with the support of Mission East and local partner Bridge of Hope. The centre will assess the educational needs of special needs students and provide guidance and advice to parents, schools and educators.
“This centre will serve as a cornerstone in the comprehensive assessment of the children with special needs. These special needs might be social, medical, educational or otherwise. Today, all of us realize that children should be the focus of our attention since they represent the future of all communities and Armenia in general,” said Mission East’s Managing Director Kim Hartzner in his opening speech.
Mission East and its partner Bridge of Hope have been at the forefront of the development of assessment tools that will be used in this Centre to evaluate the development and needs of each child.
“The establishment of this Assessment Centre will give us the means to truly understand the needs of the children who are facing educational, social or physical challenges and help their parents, educators and caretakers to better organize their future activities,” Kim Hartzner said.
Participating in this ceremony were deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Filaret Berikyan, Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan, Chairman of Public Education Department in the Ministry of Education Narine Hovhannisian, Chairman of Special Education Unit in the Ministry of Education and Science Nurijan Minasyan, representative of government agencies and government officials, representatives of local and International NGOs, schools, and parents. The centre’s establishment has been supported by World Vision.
Mission East hopes to assist the expansion of activities linked to child assessment centres and help with replication of such centres in other regions of Armenia.
