An Integrated, Community Driven Approach to Relief,Recovery and Rehabilitation in North Eastern Afghanistan

Project background

The Mission East programme in Afghanistan continues to advocate an integrated, coordinated approach to address relief and recovery needs arising from a rapidly worsening humanitarian and conflict crisis. It aims to meet the needs of people repeatedly affected and displaced by conflict, drought and natural disaster in areas which are becoming harder to reach and harder to operate in safely. Multiple and inter-linked factors of vulnerability and risk, both chronic and transient, will continue to be addressed through a series of resilience-building measures in WASH, DRR, food and livelihood security and civil society capacity-building.

Project aims

Overall Objective: To reduce vulnerability and build resilience in remote rural communities of north-eastern Afghanistan at risk from protracted instability as well as sudden-onset crises
Impact Indicator: Vulnerable households and communities show greater resilience and capacity to mitigate, adapt and recover from conflicts, natural disasters and other shocks

Project action

Mission East works with crisis-affected, vulnerable and isolated rural communities in Afghanistan to build up their capacities and resources and thereby, to empower them to drive improvement to their own situation. Through its six interlinked components, the programme seeks to achieve the following humanitarian outcomes: (i) disaster and conflict-affected people, whether displaced or vulnerable and at-risk, are enabled to meet their critical needs in the aftermath of a crisis without having to resort to negative coping strategies and sliding further into deprivation; (ii) household health and human capital is improved through reduced vulnerability to disease and malnutrition. This comes on the one hand, from improved access to safe water and adequate sanitation and good hygiene practice, and on the other, from improved food security through increased household food production and dietary diversity, especially during the critical stress gap period.
