2010 has been characterised by two things. It has been af year of extensive visits to all our field locations, engaging with our beneficiaries and partners, meeting with our field teams and seeing lives often radically transformed by the work we are involved in.

In Armenia, some doctors prescribe vitamin pills to people suffering from muscular dystrophy and tell parents that it is totally normal that children do not begin to speak until they are seven years old. In this magazine you can read about eight-year-old Garik who has already had two hip operations to correct the damage caused by medical mistreatment.

Humla district is one of the poorest in Nepal, with a Human Development Indicator of 0,367 (UNDP, 2007) and ranked by development indicators (2003) 73rd out of the 75 districts of Nepal.This is the report from an assessment that took place in September 2009 in 31 villages in south Humla along with 11 other villages.

In the area of public health, 2009 saw the beginning of an exciting new project in Armenia, with Mission East selected to lead the response of 11 national NGOs engaged in addressing the increasing threat that HIV/AIDS represents to this developing nation.

In the past twenty years, the world has achieved access to clean drinking water for 1.6 billion more people and a reduction in the number of undernourished children by 58 million.  Some significant progress is being made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. And what is Mission East doing to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals?

Approximately two years ago, 50 women from impoverished villages in Tajikistan received help to start their own small businesses that would provide them with an income and improve their living conditions. Before long, the women's hard work had created a surplus, and 'The Social Compensation Fund' was established as their opportunity to say 'thank you'.
