Help North Korea’s forgotten children

Children in North Korea face a tough start in life

With your help, we can give vulnerable children in North Korea a new chance in life. Did you know that:

  • One in five North Korean children are so malnourished that they risk permanent brain damage.
  • Diarrhea is one of the most common causes of death among North Korean children younger than five years old.
  • A North Korean child is generally three-four centimetres shorter than a South Korean child.

This winter, the situation especially serious, as part of the harvest has failed!

Bad harvest can have consequences for the children

Back in 2011 and 2012 North Korea was hit by a serious food crisis. Mission East distributed food and dietary supplements to children suffering from malnutrition. This year’s maize harvest has fallen short. Thousands of hectares of crops were damaged by intense heat in July and floods in August. Maize make up 1/3 of the diet in North Korea. Almost half the population is already malnourished, and if the situation worsens, the consequences could be fatal, especially for children.

If we react now, we can protect children from malnutrition!

Mission East helps the North Korean population improve long-term food production, and if the need arises, we will distribute emergency food aid. We provide families in the country’s neglected rural areas with access to clean drinking water and teach them how to grow nutritious crops in a sustainable way. We are completely dependent on private donations to carry out this work.

What we can do with your contribution

40 EUR gives one person access to clean water – and protection against potentially life-threatening diarrhea.

96 EUR gives nine children access to dietary supplements that can save them from malnutrition when a balanced diet is not available.

300 EUR gives the inhabitants on a collective farm access to training. This enables them to grow more food using sustainable farming methods.

Clean water

Diarrhea is a major cause of death for children younger than five years old, and it contributes to malnutrition. Access to clean water enables families to stay healthy and can save the lives of small children.

Emergency food aid

If food supplies run out before the next harvest, the consequences could be fatal. When we provide protein supplements to nurseries and kindergartens, we can prevent malnutrition among children.

Efficient farming

Better and more efficient farming methods enable families to grow more food, improve their nutrition and avoid future food shortages. The improved methods we promote make crops more resilient to disasters like the droughts and flooding that regularly affect North Korea.
